How are the tools in the ERK tool box different than standard tools? The wrenches and other hand tools are very high quality, durable, heavy duty tools that are engineered to fit and perform at a time when it is critical to have the right tool. The kit is designed and engineered to withstand the pressure, flow and external abuse that is common to this application.
Will the ERK tools only work on Midland valves? No. Valve bodies have a similar profile due to the limited space inside a tank railcar dome. The tools included in the ERK kit will work on valves other than Midland’s.
Can the kit be used for all of the fittings in a railcar dome? Yes. The kit can be used for angle valves, pressure relief valves, gauging devices, sample valves and thermowells from all valve manufacturers.
Can the Midland kit be used on all railcar domes/pressure plates? There might be instances with pressure plates on older cars where there might not be enough clearance between the misc. fitting flanges for the capping cans, due to the fitting arrangements layout.
Can the Midland Kit be used on Chlorine domes? Yes.
Will the ERK capping tools work if a tank railcar is on its side? Yes. As long as the rim of the dome is still intact.
How many people does it take to use the ERK kit? If you are only tightening valves or connections then it’s a one-man job. If you’re capping valves, it is recommended that there are at least two men using the kit.
How many tool and equipment boxes are there in a kit? One tool box and two carrying cases containing the capping cans, bridge and tie bars.
Are respirators, safety clothing and gloves included in the kit? No, that type of personal protection equipment is generally specified by the company that owns the commodity being shipped.
Can the dome be closed once the ERK is applied? No. Once the kit is applied, the dome cover cannot be closed.
Is there any other equipment that would be helpful to have with the kit but is not included in the kit? Yes. 1”, 2” and 3” threaded pipe, about 24” long to help remove angle valve flanges as necessary. Also, Duct tape and bailing wire can be very helpful in any kit.
How often should the sealing gaskets be replaced? The recommended shelf life of the gaskets is 5 years. It is also recommended that a gasket is replaced after it has been used.
What gasket materials are offered with the Midland Emergency Response Kit? Viton A and EPDM.
